Mel

2026

In Loving Memory of Mel (“Melcro”)

In 2017, we adopted a tiny Chihuahua mix with wild hair and an even bigger personality. Her name was Melody, but she quickly earned the name Melcro—because she stuck to me like Velcro. She wasn’t just my shadow, but my constant comfort and snuggle buddy.

At first, she was all mine. Then Viv and Emma won her over with carbs and cheese—her true weaknesses—and earned their place in her circle of trust.

Ian, however, never made the list.

The sound of his door opening would send her launching off the couch like a tiny missile, ready to defend her kingdom. It didn’t matter that she was small, later mostly blind, and missing teeth—Mel was always fierce, fearless, and in charge.

That was her. She made us laugh every day, loved completely, and never stopped being herself. Even as she slowed with age, her spirit never did.

Today, we had to say goodbye.

It broke our hearts, but loving her meant knowing when to let her rest. It was the hardest act of love we’ve ever had to do.

Now there’s an empty spot on the couch, no more scruffy face greeting us, no tiny feet charging to defend the house, no warm weight curled against me.

But there will always be Mel.

She leaves behind years of laughter, endless cuddles, and memories that won’t fade. We were so lucky she chose us.

Run free, sweet Mel. May there be endless blankets, all the carbs and cheese you want, and plenty of ankles to keep in line.

You were tiny, but the space you leave behind is enormous.

We will miss you every day.

Forever our Melcro. ❤️
