MERCY

2018 - 2020

Mercy was a stray cat in Providence which I fed and took care of for 3 years. Being deemed too feral to adopt out we had her spayed, vaccinated and released. Mercy had been declining for sometime. Facial paralysis sealing one of eyes shut and with a crooked walk, she’d come by every day for food ,we joked that she was jelly bean shaped because she ate so much. Mid January she stopped eating and would just sit on my front step on a heating pad I put out for her, we all knew she was reaching her end when she was no longer food motivated. On the night of January 26th I found her to have been hit by a car. She may not have been my pet but I grieve her deeply. I never got to pet her but she became a part of my family we’d see her every morning, Id even buy her a special fillet of fish for Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. She was an imperfect beauty and she was incredibly stubborn, she NEVER wanted to use whatever winter shelters we made for her each winter. She was so feisty even at the end she was a strong independent woman who didn’t need no human or any other animal for that matter. She was a sweet mother with her kitten we nick-named Little Bit who was taken by the shelter when she was old enough and put up for adoption. I have never been a religious person but I hope with all my being that Mercy gets to go to some type of cat heaven where there is no pain, fear or cold ,where she gets to sleep in the sun for the rest of eternity. She deserves so much more than what this life offered her. I will never know if she knew it, but she was truly loved.
