Romeo my friend

I spent the whole night with my friend as he struggled to breathe
I told him I would be with him and it's okay if he had to leave.
he has been by my side for 14 years through many trials -he stood by me.
the sweetest kindest pet so gentle caring could there ever be.
he kept me company on the lonely nights, before the children came
He lapped my tears of grief when my dad died and kept me from going insane.
I cannot believe he's really gone, this pain is way too much.
Our bond was so special a deep place in my heart he did touch.
I must go on, I know it's true but things won't be the same.
He took a piece of my heart with him when he went off to die.
